In This Issue…January Edition

In this Special Tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we are focusing on the legacy of Dr. King and others who helped to bring equality for all people closer to a reality than at any time in history.

WEB DuBoisOn our Cover is W.E.B. DuBois, a vocal and intellectual force for equality and 19th Century civil rights activist. The Cover Story by Anita Paul, “Civil Rights and Civil Wrongs” traces the Civil Rights Movement from W.E.B. Dubois to Martin Luther King, Jr. and the nonviolent social movement of aimed at righting the wrongs against disadvantaged Americans of all ethnic backgrounds.  The hard-won victories under his leadership were attributed to the efforts of hundreds of thousands of average African-Americans who wanted a better life for themselves and their children.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.In a moving editorial based on Dr. Martin Luther King’s words on the night before his untimely and tragic assassination, our Senior Editor explores his immortal words, “If we don’t help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?” It was his belief that if we don’t reach out and help those in need, the downtrodden and the oppressed, that they will languish in poverty and despair.  In that now famous speech, he said, “What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.” Throughout his life, he exemplified his belief that “Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”
